CCTA practical

Today's CCTA practical is the one everyone's been waiting for. Dissection of a mouse to obtain the spleen. And ta-dah! My brave group mate, Shu Mei, offered to dissect the mouse. So weird that the mice actually pee-ed just before they pass out. And some had their bowels hanging. URGH! But the suprising thing is... There was no blood. Totally clean. After the dissection part, things didn't turn really well for my group. We left out a step and had to add in the necessary step and centrifuge the tube. There's 5 minutes wasted. We also didn't have enough myeloma cells to fuse with the spleen cells. And on top of that, clumsy me had to spill the whole culture of it. In the end, I think the whole practical was screwed. All I can hope is.. There's a proper fusion if not.. there goes my marks.

National Bands Competition

NBC is finally over. But it didn't felt like a competition to me at all. Not one bit. More of a short performance. Though I felt hot the moment I got on stage. I think overall, the band sounded great. Kudos to NPCB. Great effort, great job!!

CCTA lab!

Today's CCTA practical is something rather unique. Rather gross and cruel, on the other hand, quite an experience. We had to... mince up a chicken embryo. It's at day 10 of it's life cycle. Actually the whole experiment is ok. Just that each time you think it comes from the chicken's body, my stomach just feels queasy.

In this picture below, you can see the yellowish substance. That's the supposedly egg yolk we all eat but in the case of the embroynated egg, it's actually a sac for the embryo. You can see the blood capillaries on the yolk. The round thing with 2 black dots in the petri dish, well, that's the head of the embryo. The eyes (2 black dots) are fully formed. And yes, we decapitated the head from the body.

In this picture, you could see my friend mincing up the chicken embryo's body.

And yes, this is my work area. Have to work in a sterile environment to prevent contaminations as we're culturing cells. The pair of hands you see closest to you, well, they are mine. =]

Feel queasy from the shots? =P
